Lyman Knapp, who serve as Alaska's governor from 1889 to 1893.Below is a list of these records:Fd 1: Letter, Rev. Sheldon Jackson to Gov. Lyman Knapp, 1890. Jackson presents his arguments for why his schools are needed in Alaska.Fd 2: Letter, Sam W. Very to Gov. Lyman Knapp, 1892. Retired Lt. Commander US Navy Sam Very provides a written account of his time at Sitka from Sept. 1867 to Feb. 1868 and the transfer of Alaska. Written at the request of Gov. Knapp. Fd 3: Letter, M. Whiteman to Gov. Lyman Knapp, 1893. Whiteman recounts his part of the 1861 expedition aboard the Alma Harris to the Stikine River and inland, as well as his travels on the Flying Dutchman in the same area a few years later. Fd 4: Copy of the Sitka City Charter, 1867. Copy by Lyman Knapp. Also contains post-1867 records about laws and actions taken in Sitka up to 1889.Fd 5: Various certificates appointing Knapp as a judge in the State of Vermont, 1882-1883.Fd 6: Three letters, two of which written in the Russian language, Sitka, 1890 and 1897 that concern Tlingit members of the Russian Orthodox Church. Letter 1: Priest Vladimir Donskoi, to the Sitka Indian Nikolia Kawash, May 15, 1890. In this letter the priest recommends Kawash discourage other Russian Orthodox Native Americans in Juneau not drink hard liquor, as Kawash is going to Juneau to visit his wife. Letters 2 and 3: Paraskeva Kahshahk, to Mr. Tlanich [Ionna "Ivan" Tlantech, L'aanteech], Oct. 26, 1897; and Paraskeva Kahshahk, to Yakwan [Jacob Yarkon, Yaakhwaan], Oct. 26, 1897. In these letters she asks Tlingit men L'aanteech and Yaakwaan to watch over her house and property while she is gone to Nuchek. Fd 7: Certificate of baptism for a Sitka Tlingit man who joined/was baptized into the Russian Orthodox Church in 1851. Upon baptism he took/accepted the name Nicolai. Attested by Aaron Sjostrom. Dated Nov. 28, 1868. Document in the Swedish language.Fd 8: Memo or document written by a soldier that recounts the 1892 voyage of the Mohican to Unalaska. Fd 9: File with requested copies of other US State and Territorial seals. Fd 10: Scrapbook on the life of Gov. Lyman Knapp, 1880s-1904. Includes his Governor Proclamations, personal information, clippings, letters, and photographs. Fd 11: Photocopies of official court documents regarding lands claimed by John Brady and Tlingit individuals, 1894.Note: Some of these records have been digitized and placed on Alaska's Digital Archives.
